History

In 1932, brothers Bill and Mike Brooks took a leap of faith during the Great Depression and moved their families from Columbus to Nelsonville, Ohio to start a shoe factory. The William Brooks Shoe Co. was born. The factory employed 225 people and production output increased to more than 2,000 pairs per day. During the 1940s and 1950s business continued to grow, supplying more than one million pairs of shoes and boots for military conflicts such as World War II. During this time of growth, the company also began to build key relationships with some of the most recognized and most prominent footwear retailers throughout the United States.

The company continued to grow throughout the 1980s, investing more time, money and energy in the hunting and outdoor business. In 1989 Rocky introduced a waterproof boot made with DuPont's Cordura® fabric and became one of the first licensees of Gore-Tex®, making Rocky a brand on the cutting edge of innovation, cementing itself as a premium outdoor brand.
